Infertility Treatments Options

Infertility is a problem that plagues thousands of couples and can be a very difficult and painful situation to cope with. However, nearly 90% of all infertility cases (either by male or female causation) can be overcome with infertility treatments, whether through surgical or medicinal techniques. It is important that couples thoroughly research all available and practical treatments and choose the best option for them based on financial, social, religious, ethical, and medical factors pertinent to them. Here are a few of the basic and most common infertility treatment options available.

- Intrauterine Insemination (IVI) – a very basic infertility treatment in which women have the option of doing a natural cycle, meaning no fertility drugs are used in the process. A sperm sample, taken from the husband or partner, is prepared and placed in the mother’s uterus.

- Ovulation Induction – Fertility drugs and medication is used to help the mother consistently ovulate. This process can be used for multiple cycles and in conjunction with other infertility treatments and therapies.

- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – Fertility drugs are used to induce a controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in the mother. The eggs are then removed and combined with semen in a Petri dish where they are fertilized. A couple of days later, the fertilized eggs are placed back in the uterus.

- Egg Donation – Using an egg donor is a pragmatic option for women who are not able to produce eggs or have eggs of low quality. Typically, these women are older or have experienced premature menopause. The donor eggs are fertilized through the In Vitro process and placed into the recipient’s, or birth mother’s, uterus.
